AgustaWestland reports the Philippine air force has ordered eight AW109 helicopters, as well as initial logistics support and training services.

The aircraft will feature dedicated mission packages and equipment – including weapon systems – and will be used for homeland security, armed reconnaissance and close ground support missions.

"It gives us great pleasure to sign this contract with the Philippine air force, further reinforcing the already strong partnership with the Department of National Defense," said Daniele Romiti, chief executive officer of AgustaWestland. "This latest achievement provides clear evidence of the customer's confidence in the product while we've demonstrated that we are a reliable partner, able to offer a cost-effective solution."
Deliveries of the helicopters will begin next year.

The AW109 is a twin-engine helicopter with a maximum speed of 177 miles per hour and a service ceiling of more than 19,000 feet. It features a fully separated fuel system, dual hydraulic boost system, dual electrical systems and redundant transmission and engine lubrication and cooling systems.
